Here be Dragons

This will not only be dragon toys, but also books and movies and games. But mostly toys, since I feel so strongly about collecting them.

This page is still a work in progress! Text to be changed at any time.

Dragons can be anything.

That's what makes them so interesting to me. Though people like to assign "rules" as to what makes a dragon (a dragon has arms, legs, and wings! a wyvern just has legs and wings!! someone shouts), the enlightened dragon connoisseur knows that dragons can be whatever you, personally, in your soul, in your heart, in your imagination, want them to be.

A dragon is a creature of myth, a magnificent beast, a nasty foetid lurking thing, something with teeth that bites, a dragon will feast on your bones, a dragon loves you and will carry you to the ends of the earth, past the sunset and into the night sky of imagination.

This page is a giant, very rambling list of the many different dragon things that I like, or know of, or adore with all my heart. There's more out there, there's always more, but I hope this is a good stepping stone on your journey into dragons.

Dragon Toys

Safari Ltd

The cream of the crop, the best of the best, the standard all other dragon toys should be held at. Do you want a fluffy luck dragon? What about a wierd medieval beastie dragon? A desert dragon that looks like a bug? An alien dragon that's smooth and strange? A classic asian lung dragon? Or a classic western fantasy dragon? What color? How many heads? Do you want a large model or a smaller one? The staggering range of Safari's dragon toys is a massive selling point, and it's obvious they have put a lot of thought into the fact that the concept of a "dragon" is a broad thing. No articulation, but well worth it because the textures and poses are always so good and the plastic is sturdy enough to put up with any abuse! Paint job is also solid as well. The only issue is that hunting down the specific toy you want is often a little harder than just walking into a store, and even online certain models can involve some tracking down to purchase. But it's well worth it. The A+ of dragon toys, absolute S tier.

Schleich

Schleich has an older range of dragon figures, if you can hunt them down, from a variety of lines: Bayala- their princess fantasy line with more sparkly and feathery dragons, a generic Knight line with a classic dragon, and a limited run of a half dozen or so different but very good figures (including the hunter dragon, battering ram dragon, and flyer dragon).

However, their current range (as of 2020) is their fantasy line Eldrador. These are elemental themed fantasy sets, with ice, fire, shadow, and uh... green themes. They range from silly (dumb), silly (awesome), to cool. Figures have either no or very limited articulation, the large dragons typically have moveable ball joint wings.

Mega Bloks

Mega Bloks, or Mega Construx, or Mega, or whatever they're calling it nowadays, has multiple dragon lines! They are all impossible to find in stores, and even online often you can only find used parts of sets. Good luck.

Blurbs about Mega Bloks dragon toy lines to be added

Jurassic World

Let's be real here, JP dinosaurs at this point are functionally just dragons, in the sense that they don't follow current scientific knowledge and just decided "lol let's make a bunch of big scaley scary animals to chase around our protagonists and to sell toys with." If you get past the scientific quibble, JP has some fun toys! Actual toys, so the durability is nice and high. Their choice of colors ranges between good ol' boring brown and far more fun yellows and greens and reds. Posability is usually basic action figure 5 to 6 points of articulation level, and many have goofy action features. If you want to get a little higher on the posability there are "collector's" series toys that have an excellent range of motion. They're also insanely easy to purchase at literally any store*. So yeah, I'm putting them in the dragon toy reviews and giving them a B for effort.

*in the USA at least, Target? Walmart? Bookstore? U got dinosaurs.

Smaller Toy Brand Runs

Dragamonz (2019-2020)

Made by Spin Master, Dragamonz was a card game and tie-in flash show with very small plastic dragons as part of their game gimmick. The figures are elemental themed, with each dragon typically being based off some sort of real-life animal. These included dinosaurs, bugs, reptiles, and various mammals like a bat, a horse, an elephant, and a kangaroo! They're very cute.

Fantastic World of Dragons (1998)

Made by Shadowbox Collectibles, Inc. A series of six (as far as I can tell) small soft plastic dragons each themed after a different environment, including arctic, deep sea, and jungle. Insanely hard to find and very expensive, only in my collection by sheer luck, someone misnamed them as safari on ebay and underpriced them.

Dragonriders of the Styx

Chinasaurs (1970-eternity)

A uh... Colorful term for cheap, plastic creatures that are mass produced in (typically but not always) China. These range from wildly inaccurate dinosaurs to fantasy creatures (that actually inspired the original D&D monsters), including dragons! My favorite Chinasaur dragon is not from China, but actually South America (Ecuador to be exact). South America has an excellent bootleg and cheap toy scene, with wonderful packaging and unique designs.

Dragon Books

Dragonology (read)

by Ernest Drake, Dugald A. Streer, and illus. by Wayne Anderson

Children/Fantasy

The ultimate dragon book, the book that kickstarted many 90s kids forays into dragons and what they could be. Takes a scientific, interactive approach to classifying dragons, with notes about biology and behavior and funs textures to touch in the book itself.

Tecnically a franchise type series, goes with multiple other tie in books about raising dragons, taming dragons, a field guide, and compendium.

Dragon of the Lost Sea (series, read)

Dragon of the Lost Sea, Dragon Steel, Dragon Cauldron, Dragon War

by Laurence Yep

Young Adult/Children/Fantasy

A four book series about dragon Shimmer, and her quest to retrieve her home from a witch. What seems like a simple matter (find witch, beat her up) becomes more complicated as Shimmer accidentally adopts two orphans and Chinese folk hero Monkey, and the ragtag team becomes embroiled in a kingdom shattering war between humans and dragons.

I love this series so much you can find a dedicated review of it in my site Book Library.

Adoptable Site Games

Dragon Cave

Adopt one today! Adopt one today! Adopt one today! Adopt one today! Adopt one today! Adopt one today! Adopt one today!

A clicker adopt game. Dragon Cave is a game where you collect eggs to hatch into dragons that you can breed together to unlock different types of dragons. Each dragon egg and baby grows via "views," when a person clicks on the sprite to look at it. Dragons can be named and can have small bios. Each species has it's own unique lore blurb, and some have fun transformation gimmicks based on time of day of certain events, or unique colors morphs that you can breed for. During holidays you can play simple browser games, like decorating a fake cookie, solving a murder via a visual novel, or growing a farm. They release new dragons pretty regularly, and many are user made!

The dragons pictured are from my lair, you can click on them to see more, as well as explore the site! As you can see, Dragon Cave also takes great liberties with what constitutes a dragon, and these designs are just the tip of the iceberg! I didn't even include any pygmies or my zombie dragons!

Flight Rising

Dragon Neopets. Flight Rising is a dragon themed adoptable game where you can collect, breed, and dress up dragons and play in-browser games for virtual currency (or pay irl money for the premium currency). Well... Technically that's simplified gameplay, the actual gameplay of Flight Rising can be just about whatever you want it to be. It allows for extremely casual play and for complex lore building and free-market strategies to make money and breed specific dragons, and the site is constantly releasing new things to do.

I have been playing Flight Rising on and off since it first released to the public in 2013. I enjoy the lore building aspect and the browser games. And collecting. I love collecting stuff.

Video Games

We all know every single large scale open-world style game where you can play as a dragon will be inevitably cursed with some sort of financial or copyright drama, so I will not be talking about any of them until they come out finished and are any good.

Thank you for understanding.

Century: Age of Ashes (PC, 2021-present)

It's an aerial dogfighting PVP game, so I haven't played it. The dragons are very pretty though.

School of Dragons (PC, 2014-2023)

The HTTYD dragon game. I did not play it. My buddy Quazar did, and basically described it as a super frustrating, bug-filled experience that they continued to play anyway, because dragons, which is honestly relatable.
